In a Unix, BSD, or other *nix environments, the root account can do things that even standard administrators typically can t do. A root account can be a security risk, which is why Apple has disabled root by default, but it is an account you may find you need to enable from time to time. If you are new to administering Mac OS X from the command line, you may wish to enable the root account for certain GUI operations that would otherwise use the command line, such as renaming a home folder or editing a configuration file owned by root. To enable the root account, open the Directory Utility application found on the Accounts pane of System Preferences (version 10.6), or in the /Applications/Utilities folder (version 10.5). As with most secure operations in Mac OS X, you will need to authenticate to perform this action using the lock in the corner of this window. Then click on the Edit menu and select Enable Root User, which will display the screen shown in Figure 1-4. Next, enter the password that will be assigned to the root user and click on OK.
